COVID-19 Safety and Infection Control Protocols

The doctors and staff at Greene and Torio, OMFS recognize that this is an unnerving time.  We want to reassure our patients that our safety measures and infection control protocols are in adherence of, and exceed, standards set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and American Dental Association (ADA).

Our primary focus is to provide your care in the safest environment.  With modifications of our pre-treatment, treatment, and office protocols, we have maximized our patients’ safety when receiving care in our practice.

Pre-Treatment Protocols

  • Telephone pre-screening of COIVD-19 questions prior to scheduling appointments
  • Teledentistry visits for consultation and follow-up appointments to minimize number of patients in the office
  • Staggered patient appointments to reduce number of patients being treated simultaneously
  • Escorts waiting in car during treatment rather than in our reception room
  • Paperless workflow for patient registration, consents, HIPAA, etc.

Treatment Protocols

  • Expansion of our medical grade air filtration and purification systems within our offices.  Air filtration units with HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters will be placed in each operatory and will clean the room’s air every 15 minutes. HEPA filters trap 99.97% of >0.3 micron-sized particles, which includes viruses and bacteria.
  • Pre-Appointment Check-In outside our office
    • Repeat pre-screening of COVID-19 questions and temperature check for any and all patients/escorts entering the office
  • Patients will be provided a mask if they do not have their own
  • Pre-procedure rinse with 1% hydrogen peroxide
  • All surgical staff wearing N95 respirators (protected by a surgical mask), full-face shields, scrub coats or disposable gowns, and surgical caps when in the treatment room with a patient
    • Surgical masks, surgical caps, and gowns are disposed of following each patient’s treatment
    • If a scrub coat is worn rather than a disposable gown, this is removed immediately following each patient’s treatment and laundered before reuse.
    • Full-face shields will be disinfected following each patient’s treatment
  • Keep operatory door closed during treatment
  • Diligent disinfection of all exposed surfaces (counters, chairs, lights, floors, pulse ox/BP cuff, etc.) in the operatory
  • Post-op or follow-up visits, if necessary, scheduled via teledentistry when possible

Office Protocol

  • Daily temperature checks and COVID-19 symptoms screening for staff
  • Diligent hand hygiene by staff with hand sanitizers throughout the office
  • Masks worn by all staff, at all times
  • Designated “work” shoes and scrubs that are only worn and laundered on site for all staff
  • Adhering to social distancing guidelines in the office AND home

Dear Valued Patients,

On May 8, Governor Sununu’s Taskforce provided the New Hampshire dental community with COVID-19 reopening guidance. While we will continue to see dental emergencies, we are now able to schedule elective surgeries such as wisdom teeth and implants. For patients that had appointments scheduled during the first stay-at-home order, our administrative team will be working diligently to reschedule your appointment. Greene and Torio OMFS is fully prepared to care for our patients in the safest environment. Please reference our patient letter dated May 4 below for further details of our infection control practices and COVID-19 pre-screening process.

As always, we look forward to providing you with exceptional dental care!

Sincerely,
Drs. Greene, Torio, Decoteau, Madden, and Burk

May 4, 2020

Dear Patients and Families,

On March 13, 2020, Governor Sununu issued an Executive Order declaring a state of emergency due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Since March 16, Greene and Torio OMFS has restricted our care to treating only dental emergencies. We enacted our policy based on recommendations by our professional dental organizations such as the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and American Dental Association (ADA). In regards to resuming elective dental procedures, the state government and New Hampshire Dental Society are working diligently to provide guidance to the dental professionals in our state. Their statement is expected during the week of May 4.

Recognizing that your dental needs do not stop for pandemics, we are updating you on the infection control precautions Greene and Torio OMFS has taken in this era of COVID-19 to ease your concerns. Our primary concern is to deliver your dental care in the safest environment.

You will notice differences at your next dental visit that have been implemented to ensure your health and safety. We have made modifications to our already exceptional infection control practices to minimize exposure risk to you and staff.  The changes include:

Sterilization Procedures

  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by doctors and surgical assistants including N95 mask, surgical mask, gloves, surgical cap, full-face shield, gown or scrub jacket, and shoe coverings when treating ALL PATIENTS
  • Strict surface disinfection (countertops, chairs, floors, lights, doorknobs, computer keyboard and mouse, blood pressure cuff/pulse oximetry, etc.) after all patient encounters
  • Six-stage air filtration system to purify the indoor air
    • Greene and Torio OMFS has an air purification system that cleans and purifies the office’s air every 30 minutes* and kills 99% of a COVID-19 surrogate. (Formal testing of COVID-19 has not been carried out but testing on a surrogate virus of similar composition has shown to be reduced by 99%.)

*Since publishing this letter, Greene and Torio OMFS has upgraded our air filtration and purification system. Now there is an air purification unit in each operatory and it filters the room’s air every 15 minutes. (5/12/2020)

  • Requiring patients to wash hands upon entry and do an oral rinse with 1.5% hydrogen peroxide prior to treatment

These efforts are in accordance with, and exceed, ADA, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidance and recommendations.  Additional modifications to our practice minimizing potential opportunities for exposure include changes in our patient and employee health screening, patient scheduling, and office layout.

Patient Health Screening

  • Telephone screening for potential COVID-19 exposures and symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath as well as travel history
  • Measurement of patient’s temperature upon arrival

Employee Health Screening

  • Measurement of all employee’s temperatures daily
  • Strict enforcement of our sick policy
  • All staff wears masks, at all times
  • Maintaining social distancing practices at home and in the office

New Office Policy and Standards

  • Telephone “check-in” and requesting escorts to wait in the car during treatment
  • Staggering patient appointments to minimize contact among patients
  • Utilizing teledentistry for post-op/follow-up visits and consultations when applicable
  • Removal of extraneous materials (pamphlets, magazines, etc.) from reception/operatory spaces to allow for more effective disinfection following contact/procedures

Although it is an unnerving time, the doctors and staff at Greene and Torio OMFS want to reassure you that we strictly adhere to, and go beyond, the ADA, CDC, and OSHA recommendations for infection control.  While many things have changed, our commitment to your safety has not. We look forward to doing what we do best – providing exceptional dental treatment to you and our community.  Please call our office at (603) 883-4008 with any questions.

Sincerely,

Drs. Greene, Torio, Decoteau, Madden, and Burk and Staff
