Exposure of Impacted Teeth
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Nashua and Bedford, NH
An impacted tooth is one that is trapped beneath bone or gum tissue and is unable to grow into a functional position. Canine (cuspid) teeth are the second most common type of impacted teeth after the wisdom teeth. The canines have the longest roots of any human teeth and are crucial for proper occlusion and chewing. If these teeth do not erupt normally into the mouth, we will work with your orthodontist to bring these teeth into the proper position. This frequently requires an “exposure and bond”. The procedure involves surgically opening the gums overlying the tooth to uncover it, and “bonding” or attaching an orthodontic bracket and chain to the tooth. The orthodontist will then use this chain to slowly pull the impacted tooth into the proper location in the mouth.
